SEA-CYCLE: Sustainable aquaculture industry waste valorization through recycling

Aquaculture is currently the fastest-growing food production sector worldwide. Proper handling of waste from fish farming can be crucial to ensure a sustainable production.

The SEA-CYCLE project aims to implement circular economy principles when managing and utilizing waste from fish farming. The project seeks to establish a value chain for fish sludge by:
i) Exploring valorization options for aquaculture sludge through anaerobic digestion and pyrolysis
ii) Evaluating nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) recovery, as well as heavy metal content
iii) Assessing the potential of aquaculture wastewater-enriched biochar as a bio-based fertilizer.

The SEA-CYCLE project is lead by NMBU. NORSUS is responsible for assessing the environmental and economic impacts of these proposed technologies, in collaboration with NMBU. This will be done by performing life cycle analysis (LCA) and social cost-benefit analysis of the treatment alternatives.
