Economic and Environmental Optimization of Norwegian Farms.
Dairy and beef farmers face several important decisions, such as how to best utilize their land, how many animals to keep, and how to feed them. On the one hand, these decisions must ensure an economically sustainable operation, so that the farm remains a viable business. At the same time, they must also take into account the environmental impact, such as greenhouse gas emissions. Balancing economic considerations with environmental goals is a major challenge for farmers. The main objective of this project is to develop a farm model that can support Norwegian farmers in their decision-making processes. The goal is to find solutions that are both economically profitable and environmentally sustainable.
The project is based on close collaboration between research institutions and industry partners. Decision-making tools are developed by combining technical expertise in areas such as mathematical modeling, computational optimization, animal science and farm management with practical knowledge from key players in the agricultural sector. Through case studies on actual farms, in collaboration with farm advisors and farmers, the project will test and further develop the models in practice. The goal is to give Norwegian farmers better access to decision support that makes it possible to achieve environmental goals in a profitable way - which in turn will strengthen Norway as a sustainable food-producing nation.
