GSP – Ship – LCI - EPD

This project where initiated by Green Shipping program (GSP). Statens Vegvesen leads the project supported by DNV and Kystrederiene. The goal of the project is to map the environmental impact caused by bulk-freighters in Norway and to develop LCA-based dataset for development of environmental declarations (EPDs), whilst also evaluating alternative fuel sources for shipping. The alternative fuel sources are green hydrogen, green ammonia and battery charged by Norwegian location-based electricity. In the study datasets for marine gas oil (MGO) bulk freighter are developed for ship sizes from 600 to 6700 dead weight tonnes (DWT), for liquid natural gas (LNG) 400 DWT. Additionally prospective EPD datasets are developed for green hydrogen, green ammonia and battery fuelled by Norwegian electricity for 4000DWT bulk freighters. Scenarios are developed comparing loading and unloading of bulk cargo by use of diesel or electric excavators for all of the included bulk ship sizes.
