FeedLoop – Optimizing feed resources for a circular food system

The role of livestock in our food system is highly debated due to their significant environmental impacts, such as climate change, eutrophication and biodiversity loss. In addition, Norway’s dependence on imported feed and food makes the food system vulnerable. A more circular livestock production can help to meet these challenges. In the previous LIVESTOCK project  the sustainability of Norwegian livestock production was assessed and the results underlined the importance of feed resources. The project pointed out the need to rethink biomass for feed and explore opportunities for increased circularity. The biggest challenges are policy design and resource allocation, which requires long-term perspective and financial incentives.

The FeedLoop project aims to optimize the use of biomass by proposing a redesign of the food system. Tolga and Steinkjer municipalities, as well as nearby areas in Innlandet and Trøndelag counties, will serve as case areas. The project will also identify barriers and opportunities to implement necessary changes. A multidisciplinary approach will be used, and various stakeholders will be involved to find solutions that balance environmental, economic and social considerations.
