Transportation is an important part of most value chains. When evaluating the environmental impacts from transport systems, the entire value chain for transport should be included. This comprises the production, distribution and combustion of the fuels, as well as production, maintenance and waste treatment of the vehicle and the necessary infrastructure.

NORSUS has worked systematically on documenting and comparing the environmental impacts of different types of biofuels and performs assessments of how load factors and return transport affect the environmental impacts. NORSUS has been project manager for several research projects with the aim of improving logistic systems, for instance for collection of household waste and Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE). This involves for example improving procurement processes by ensuring that the contract agreements are economically sustainable for all actors, and that the environmental- and resource perspective is considered properly in the tender process.
