One of packaging’s major functions is to protect the packed product during its travel to the consumer. Hence, the packaging is an investment for preventing product loss and contributes to the overall environmental impact of the packed product. However, packaging can contribute to product losses, e.g. by using too large packaging units or packaging units that are hard to empty. The choice of packaging material and the potential waste treatment at the end of life are important for the overall environmental impact of the product. Both recycled content in the packaging as well as end of life recycling after use are important issues for assessing the environmental impact of the packaging. Packaging represents the largest annual plastic consumption in Norway (50%). NORSUS has 30 years’ experience in documenting and analysing the environmental impact of different packaging materials based on LCA methodology, as a basis for declarations (e.g. EPD) and for life cycle improvements.
